Founder, PAHAL (1962–2021)
Professor Lakhbir Singh was an educator, social reformer, environmentalist, youth mentor and the visionary founder of PAHAL – An Initiative for Social Development. His life was dedicated to the service of humanity and the belief that meaningful social change begins with the development of the individual.
Born on 14 June 1962 in Village Jatike, District Kapurthala, Punjab, Professor Lakhbir Singh grew up with a deep concern for society and a strong commitment to public service. He later joined DAV College, Jalandhar, as a Lecturer in the Postgraduate Department of Punjabi, where he became known not only as a teacher but also as a mentor who inspired young people to think beyond themselves and contribute to society.
During his interactions with students and communities, he observed a growing disconnect between personal success and social responsibility. He believed that modern society was producing individuals focused primarily on themselves, while volunteerism, community participation and social consciousness were steadily declining.
This realization led him to establish PAHAL in 1996, along with a group of like-minded individuals, with the objective of promoting holistic personality development and creating a more compassionate and responsible society.
Under his leadership, PAHAL evolved into one of Punjab’s most active voluntary organizations. Guided by the philosophy that the welfare of an individual is inseparable from the welfare of society, he championed initiatives in health, education, environment and communication-the four pillars upon which PAHAL was founded.
Professor Lakhbir Singh’s contributions touched thousands of lives. He led numerous blood donation campaigns, health awareness drives, cancer awareness programmes, environmental initiatives and educational projects. Through PAHAL and its volunteers, medical facilities reached remote communities, environmental awareness was promoted across Punjab, and educational support was extended to underserved populations. He was particularly passionate about motivating young people to become active participants in nation-building and social development.
One of the defining chapters of his life began in 2006 when he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer. Doctors initially gave him limited chances of survival. However, he faced the disease with extraordinary courage and determination. Following chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he not only survived but transformed his personal struggle into a source of inspiration for countless others. During his cancer journey, he continued to work tirelessly for social causes, often encouraging cancer patients and their families to face adversity with hope and resilience. He became a source of strength and motivation for cancer survivors across the region.
Rather than allowing illness to define him, Professor Lakhbir Singh used his experience to spread awareness about cancer, promote early diagnosis and support those facing similar challenges. He often spoke about living life fully despite adversity and celebrated every additional day of life as an opportunity to serve others. His story inspired many cancer survivors and their families, making him a respected advocate for hope, courage and positive living.
Environmental conservation was another cause close to his heart. Through plantation drives, environmental awareness campaigns and community participation, he encouraged thousands of people, particularly young volunteers, to contribute towards protecting nature and creating a greener future. His vision extended beyond immediate social issues and emphasized sustainable development, environmental stewardship and responsible citizenship.
Professor Lakhbir Singh passed away on 6 August 2021 after a remarkable sixteen-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. Yet his legacy continues through the countless lives he touched, the volunteers he inspired and the institution he built. The values that guided his life – service, compassion, resilience, volunteerism and social responsibility, remain at the heart of PAHAL’s mission.
Today, PAHAL continues to carry forward his dream of a healthy, educated, environmentally conscious and socially responsible society. His life stands as a reminder that one individual, driven by conviction and compassion, can inspire positive change far beyond his own lifetime.
Major awards and recognitions received by him.
