When the National Child Labour Project concluded, the need for educational support among vulnerable and underprivileged children did not disappear.
Recognizing that many children continued to face barriers to education, PAHAL launched Umang School in 2022 as a community-driven initiative to provide learning opportunities, care and support to children from marginalized communities.
What began as a single centre in a rented facility in Bhagat Singh Colony has since grown into a network of four learning centres across Jalandhar, serving children from economically disadvantaged families.
Umang School is one of PAHAL’s flagship community initiatives and is primarily supported through donations from individual donors and well-wishers who believe that every child deserves access to education.
Most children attending Umang School come from families of migrant labourers who have moved to Punjab from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan in search of work and livelihood opportunities.
Many of these families face economic hardship, unstable living conditions and limited access to educational support, making it difficult for children to remain engaged with formal schooling.
Umang School seeks to bridge this gap by providing a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment where children can learn, grow and prepare for a brighter future.
Inspired by the holistic education model developed through PAHAL’s earlier child education initiatives, Umang School focuses not only on academic learning but also on the overall development of every child.
Each centre is supported by a full-time teacher along with dedicated volunteers who contribute their skills and time to enrich children’s learning experiences.
Umang School operates through the collective support of volunteers, donors and community members who share PAHAL’s belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for social change.
By providing educational opportunities, nutritional support and a nurturing environment, the programme helps children build confidence, develop aspirations and move towards a more secure future.
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, dream and succeed regardless of their social or economic circumstances.
Through Umang School, PAHAL continues its long-standing commitment to holistic education by ensuring that children from vulnerable communities receive not only academic support but also the care, encouragement and opportunities needed to realise their full potential.
Umang School is supported largely through community donations and volunteer efforts. You can support the programme by sponsoring educational materials, contributing towards meals, volunteering your time or making a donation to help us reach more children.
