Supporting the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP)

Strengthening Community-Based Tuberculosis Detection and Care

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of India’s most significant public health challenges, affecting millions of individuals and families each year. Early identification, timely treatment and community awareness are critical to reducing the burden of the disease and achieving the national goal of eliminating tuberculosis.

To support the Government of India’s National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), PAHAL has been implementing the LT Scheme Project in Jalandhar for the past ten years. Building on its experience and contribution to TB prevention and control, PAHAL expanded the programme to Ludhiana in January 2026, further strengthening community outreach and access to TB screening services.

The programme focuses on identifying individuals with symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis, facilitating early diagnosis and ensuring that affected individuals are linked to appropriate healthcare services for treatment and follow-up care.

Our Approach

PAHAL works at the community level to identify and support individuals who may be at risk of tuberculosis. Through active outreach and screening activities, the programme reaches vulnerable and underserved populations who may otherwise face barriers in accessing healthcare services.

A dedicated team currently supports implementation of the programme:

Jalandhar

  • 2 LT personnel

Ludhiana

  • 6 LT personnel

The field teams conduct community-based screening activities, identify presumptive TB cases and facilitate access to diagnostic services.

Linking Communities to Care

Individuals identified through the programme are referred to the concerned Civil Hospitals for further evaluation and diagnosis under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme.

Community Awareness and Prevention

In addition to case identification and referrals, the programme works to increase awareness about tuberculosis and reduce stigma associated with the disease.

Awareness activities focus on:

  • Recognizing TB symptoms
  • Importance of early diagnosis
  • Treatment adherence
  • Prevention and control measures
  • Accessing government healthcare services

Through community engagement and outreach, PAHAL encourages individuals to seek timely medical attention and supports efforts to create informed and healthy communities.

Supporting a TB-Free India

PAHAL remains committed to supporting the vision of a tuberculosis-free India through community-based action, early case detection, strengthened referral systems and public awareness.

By working closely with communities and government health systems, the LT Scheme Project contributes to improving access to diagnosis, facilitating timely treatment and supporting national efforts towards tuberculosis elimination.
